Description
This piece was originally an openwork architectural window. The outer frame shows uneven oxidation, wear, and dark patina around the old nail heads, which is consistent with early 20th-century craftsmanship. The relief work showcases traditional gilding applied over the wood. The darkened, exposed wood grain around it highlights the age, giving it the distinctive look of a repurposed Qing dynasty or early 20th-century openwork window panel.
Now, what about the symbology of the motif images? It highlights a classic Chinese artistic motif known as “Squirrels and Grapes” (松鼠葡萄 – Sōngshǔ pútao). This pairing is deeply symbolic in traditional Chinese culture – grapes signifying abundance and squirrels, known for fast and large reproduction, represent family lineage. Together with the multi-seeded grapes, this combination creates a visual blessing for fertility and a long line of descendants.
The mirror is topped off by a beautiful brass hanging loop shaped in a stylized Ruyi cloud representing good fortune, blessings, and the granting of personal wishes. The wood relief below it is a geometric fretwork pattern which traditionally symbolizes eternity and long life.
