Description

Now, here is a beautiful piece to add either to your collection, or as a conversation starting centerpiece of décor, of handmade art that has faithfully maintained the same method for centuries.

What is Gzhel pottery, you may ask? Allow me to enlighten you.

Gzhel is named after the Russian village of Gzhel where it has been produced since the 14th century. Gzhel pottery is made of porcelain, and sometimes faience. Genuine Gzhel is characterized by blue and white patterns, often floral, that is always hand-painted with cobalt, which turns blue after firing. It has been long collected and used for home decor, tableware, and figurines by Russians who have the means to do so. Original pieces, like this stunning vase, may have a double-headed eagle or oval “Gzhel” logo with “Handmade in Russia” stamp (which is what the script on the bottom translates to).
