Soviet Russia (Ukraine) USSR Camel Hair Traditional Woven Blanket – Mid-Century

$325.00

Description

Here is a fun piece in excellent condition preserved from Soviet Russia.

This is a vintage “camel wool” blanket manufactured in Lubny, Ukraine at the Lubny Felt Factory (Lubenska Odialno-Povstiana Fabryka) in the Ukrainian USSR.

Material: A thick hand-dyed camel wool product, at that time used as a warm blanket, decorative wall hanging with its bright and vibrant traditional patterns, or floor covering, but now a very collectable piece of Soviet textile manufacturing and old Ukrainian village life.

Lubni itself is a quiet rural country village that also faced tremendous oppression and devastation from the Germans in the late nineteen thirties through early nineteen forties. At that time, it was only a little over two thousand people who lived there, and that population was sadly reduced at the hands of the German Socialist party (better known by their other four-letter name). There is much history and story behind a blanket like this.

In fact, to add more weight to the stories this blanket may have heard told from folks in the village, if not itself witnessed, for historical reference, the last two photos in the listing was taken on October 16th, 1941 as the Germans rounded up all those people in the village you see in the photo. I will spare you the details of the fate of what happened to all those 4,500 folks throughout the long hours of that particular day, double the population of the town itself.
