While coastal towns all over Italy produce nautical ceramics, this exact combination of earthy sgraffito lines and deep volcanic teals is heavily tied to specific regions. This dish pulls heavily from the ancient mosaic styles of Sicily (Palermo & Santo Stefano di Camastra), ad well as the Campania region.
The playful, stylized fish motif with blocky, textured scales strongly replicates the mid-century folk-art aesthetic popularized by legendary Sicilian ceramicist Giovanni de Simone.The colors are an intentional deep sea-greens, sun-baked oranges, and bold outlines which are hallmarks of Sicilian majolica, which blends Mediterranean marine life with vibrant regional folklore.
