Description
This 18800s – 1920s antique dowry chest was rescued from from Morocco’s Rif or Atlas region, and it is GORGEOUS, accentuated by 100% hand-carved tool marks and aged hand-hewn and aged oxidated wood dripping in the warm charm of naturally dried patina. This chest is similar, yet distinctly different, to the traditional chests of the Swat Valley in Pakistan.
As a Dowry chest, these would be used in that culture for storing items such as jewelry, clothing, linens, cosmetics, personal valuables and/or dowry items. If used more as a utilitarian purpose, they could hold such as grain, filling through the hole in the top and released by the lifting door in the front.
There is not an inch of the front or top or sides that is not heavily decorated, if not from the intricate hand carved details and scroll work from the decorated edges to the finials at the top, the original escutcheon, then the hallmark of a man who made this carefully using hand tools as every detail and space reflects. This stunning piece of North African culture is held together through traditional peg joinery rather than modern nails.
This is a strong piece of authentic culture excellent for boho, tribal, or rustic decor.
