Description

This antique tureen from the 1800s is absolutely beautiful period but not only is it beautiful, but it is fun to decipher the English marks on the seal underneath.

IV (denotes material) – Ceramic

9- 1842 to 1867 period marks have a letter at the top of the diamond. Whereas marks registered in the period 1868 to 1883 have a number instead of a letter at the top of the diamond. In this period, the day of the month of manufacture is denoted – 9th

4 – in this of 1868-1883 it denotes the internal parcel bundle.

D – Letters were used in this section, rather than numbers, during the 1868 – 1883 era. They denote the year made – 1878

C – Denotes month created – January

This stunner was manufactured of ceramic on January 9th, 1878. Also on that day, January 9, 1878, multiple events occurred, including the death of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, and the birth of John Broadus Watson, an American psychologist.

Anyway, given its age, this is best used as display of 19th century English ceramic craftsmanship rather than practical use. It has appropriate crazing i the glaze, some staining in parts of the ceramic from use, and there is a part of the foot that was repaired, but completely unseen if facing to the back. It IS almost 150 years old and was used in a home afterall. The colors are vibrant and immaculate.
