Lamps are a bright idea and a true illumination of functional décor. They not only light a room, but they can be a very expression of an individual’s style and a way to either tie a room together or create an intentional decorative disobedience to the rules of a room’s style when deliberately and intentionally used as contrast to pop and stand out. These lamps are of no exception.
The more you look at these lamps, the better they become. These Don Ward lantern-style table lamps were highly popular during the 1970s and 1980s, epitomizing the late Mid-Century Modern transition into organic, warm-toned interior design.
They were designed and built using a signature combination of solid oak frames, polished brass-tone metal accents, and smoked or amber-tinted glass panels. Those glass panels feature delicate, hand-etched (an artistic touch making each lamp unique from another) botanical motifs—typically representing wheat stalks, grass sprays, or soft floral vines—which catch and diffuse light.
The “Flickering Candle” effect adds charm. Inside the lantern body sits a clustered brass base designed to look like multi-tiered candle cylinders. These use small, low-wattage bulbs (or specialized flickering flame bulbs) to simulate a real candlelight glow accentented by the rear panel. The inside of the lantern structure is lined with a smoked mirror. This reflects the interior “candles” to create a deeper, multi-dimensional illusion of light and extra glimmer.
These are highly functional accent pieces operating on a 3-way or 4-way switch: Top Only: Illuminates the main upper bulb (which would be under a traditional fabric or pleated lampshade).
Base Only: Illuminates only the inner candle tubes to act as a soft nightlight or ambient mood lantern.
Both On: Full illumination of both sections for a brilliant showcase of the wood, brass, and etched glass.
